The Directorate of Social Welfare in Guwahati well assures protection of these deprived sections of the society, proper care of the uncared and building of a healthy environment for the overall development of a child, woman and the physically challenged.

The Directorate of Social Welfare was created by the Assam Govt. in the year 1960. And hence the key responsibility of this department is to see phenomenal expansion in the coming years due to the heightened social awareness of the problems faced by the physically challenged persons, women and children. Guwahati is home to a big list of NGOs, Orphanages, Old Age homes, Blind Welfare, Women Welfare and lots more. NGOs like Snehalaya, SOS Village are some of the oldest non-governmental organisations in Guwahati and have been playing an active role from the time of its inauguration. The SOS Children's Villages has their branches all over India and have been working in Guwahati since 1988, they work for the overall development of a child’s well being and their work has developed rapidly all over the country foe the last 50 years.  The main focus of the work that SOS Children's Villages carries out in the city of Guwahati is related to supporting the deprived children and families near where the organization is based. They provide families with hygienic food, medical treatment, as well as educational support. And also in order for parents to generate income, they offer them career counseling, vocational training and advice on how to look for a job. Hence, for example some women have been trained in goat and pig rearing, tailoring and many of them have opened small shops.

Guwahati Welfare Organisations

The House of Love is also another NGO that functions in Guwahati for the protection, love and care of children who are in distress irrespective of caste and creed. It is a social service programme carried on by the Don Bosco Society. Snehalaya has their branches all over India and in Guwahati it was officially launched on August 16, 2000.
