Tezpur:

Barpeta

Barpeta, also known as ‘Land of the Satras’ is the second largest town of the Barpeta district in Assam. Place to visit around guwahatiBarpeta has a number of Satras across the region propagated by the great Assamese reformer and preacher Mahapurush Shrimanta Sankardeva and his followers. The Barpeta town is surrounded by canals and two tributaries of the Brahmaputra which are Saolkhowa and Mora Nodi.

The town of Barpeta shone on the cultural map of India with the remarkable works of the renowned reformer and cultural exponent Mahapurush Shrimanta Sankardeva. Sankardeva preached religious and cultural values through the Satra institutions he built. After Sankardeva, his followers continued his teachings and legacy to make Barpeta one of the popular towns of Assam.

There are many different Satras and institutions in Barpeta built by Sankardeva and his followers. Some of these are Patbaushi Satra, Ganakuchi Satra, Jania Satra and Barpeta Satra among others. The Patbaushi Satra was built by Mahapurush Shrimanta Sankardeva. He spent 18 yrs of his life completing the ‘Kirtan Ghosh’ as well as composed 20 priceless Borgeets. The Ganakkuchi Satra was found by Sri Madhab Deva. Sankardeva selected Madhab Deva as the Satradhikar to carry on his teaching in this Satra. The Jania Satra was built Shri Narayan Das Thakur Ata, disciple of Shrimanta Sankardeva.

The Jania Satra is located at a distance of 8 kms from Barpeta in the Barpeta Jania Road. The Barpeta Satra was founded by Shri Madhab Deva and he stayed here for 8 years. There is the Kirtan Ghar in the Satra where Naam and Kirtan are held regularly. The ‘Bhajghar’, the lamp house is a place where the ‘Akhay Banti’, a lamp is burning continuously for more than 400 years. Pari Hareswar Devalaya is a Shiva temple located in Dubi near Patshala. The famous dance ‘Devadasi Nritya’ is considered to have been originated in this temple.Barpeta also houses some of the remarkable handicraft industries like the bell and brass metal industry, pottery making, mask making and paintings, jewelry, ivory carvings and wooden crafts.

Golaghat

Golaghat is a beautiful town in Assam and is the sister town of Jorhat which is located around 5 kms from Golaghat town. Sualkuchi

SualkuchiSualkuchi, popularly known as ‘Manchester of the East’ for being one of the weaving villages of the world, is located around 35 kms from Guwahati. It is situated on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra. There are many handloom industries in Sualkuchi. Weaving is the major occupation of the people of Sualkuchi. The Silk weaving tradition of Sualkuchi can be traced to the 11th century during the time when King Dharma Pal of the famous Pala Dynasty sponsored the weaving craft and brought with him 26 weaving families from Tantikuchi place to Sualkuchi. The silk Muga dresses and Pator chadors, mekhelas chadors and other garments have been are worn from times immemorial.

The silk looms and weaving industry are itself tourist spots with people coming to look into them. The Dain-Thlen Falls is a beautiful and soft waterfall as there is no noise of the water falling down even from a great height.

The Nohkalikai Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls of India. The beautiful fall falls from a forested drainage into a rocky base which is accompanied by blue pool. The height of the Nohkalikai falls is 1100 feet and has a giant cave behind it. The Nohsngithiang Falls, located south of Mawsmai village is also known as the Seven Sisters waterfalls or Mawsmai falls as the waterfall is a seven segmented fall. The Nohsngithiang Falls is the 4th highest waterfalls of India. The water falls down from 1,033 feet.
