Shillong


Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya state is a hill town and a famous tourist spot of Northeast India. Shillong town is located on the Shillong plateau at altitude of 1496 meters. The Shillong Peak is the highest point in Shillong. Elephant Falls is one of the most visited tourist spots in Shillong. It is located around 10 kms from the city. The mountain stream in Elephant Falls carves out its way and descends into two falls until it merges into a base as a stream. There is a viewpoint in the falls with stairs carved and built from mountain rocks and also a small bridge which leads to the base of the Elephant falls. There are also many other falls like the Spread Eagle Falls in Shillong, Bishop and Beadon Falls, Sweet Falls and the Crinoline Falls.

The Lady Hydari Park is a beautiful park with shrubs and trees adorning the park and also a mini zoo which stretches for a kilometer in the park. The flowers in the Lake Hydari Park are exquisite and enchanting. The Wards lake is an artificial lake having boating facilities with lots of fish in the park lake. One can see tourists feeding the fishes from the bridge on the lake. The park which has a walkway and green lawns is located in the heart of the city. 

Shillong Peak is a picnic spot which offers a panoramic view of the Shillong country side. One can view the entire Shillong town with the backdrop of hills on the horizon. Cathedral of Mary Help of Christian is situated between Dhankheti and Laitumkhrah area in Shillong and is dedicated to Mary Help of Christians. There are a number of other churches and cathedrals in Shillong which conduct regular masses and are visited by people. Iewduh is a market located next to Motphran and is the largest traditional market of the Khasis in Shillong. The market is managed by the Syiem of Mylliem and there are traditional rituals held every year. The distinctive feature of this Iewduh market is that it is dominated by women only.

Tawang

TawangTawang town is a beautiful town located in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. The town derived its name from the Tawang Monastery located on the ridge along the western part of the town. The Tawang monastery was founded by Merag Lama Lodre Gyamtso in the year 1681. 

The Monpa ethnic group comprises large population of Tawang with a small amount of Tibetan people and Takpa, a small tribal group also residing in the town. The majority of Tawang population is Tibetan Buddhist with Pre-Buddhist Bon and Shamanist people also residing here. Tawang town has much natural beauty and beautiful locations. Tawang is paradise on earth and also a popular tourist destination. Many tourists from across India and the world come annually to Tawang to experience its beauty.

There are a number of monasteries and nunneries in Tawang with the Tawang Monastery being the prime one for religious sanctity. Other monasteries include the Regyaling Gonpa, the Urgeling Gonpa, Takstsang Gonpa, the Gorsam Chorten, Gyangong Ani Gonpa and the Singsor Ani Gonpa.
Tawang also has many beautiful beautiful falls like the Nuranang Falls, Bap Teng Kang Falls, with lake like Pangang Teng Tso Lake, Shonga-tser Lake and the Banga Jang Lake.

The beautiful Nuranang Falls in Tawang are located around 40 kms from the town in between the Sela Pass and Tawang at an altitude of 6000 feet. This falls also known as Jang Falls and is considered to be one of the most beautiful falls of Northeast India. The Nuranang Falls became much popular when a song from the popular Bollywood movie Koyla featuring renowned Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit was shot here in this falls.

The Panggang Teng Tso Lake is located around 18 kms from Tawang and is one of the famous lakes of Arunachal Pradesh. It is an ideal spot for picnic and provides a good place for skiing during winters as it remains entirely frozen. There is also Sela Pass; a beautiful pass located around 40 kms from Tawang and the Tawang War Memorial in memoriam of the brave soldiers who fought the Sino-Indian War of 1962.

The Shonga-tser Tso Lake is popularly known as Madhuri Lake by tourists as the actress Madhuri Dixit’s film Koyla was filmed here. This lake is about 42 kms from Tawang and was formed after the 1950 earthquake. The Thingbu hot spring which has medical and therapeutic healing value in its waters is situated about 68 kms away from Tawang.

How to reach Tawang

The best way of travel to Tawang is by road. There are buses or private taxi vehicles available from Guwahati or Tezpur. There is also a flight service in Tawang which connects Tawang to Guwahati and runs twice in a week from Itanagar. There are a number of good lodges and accommodation facilities available in Tawang.

The town of Gangtok is well connected with the northeast and rest of India by national highways. The National highways 31A and 31 link Gantok to Siliguri in West Bengal. There are regular buses, private vehicles, jeeps and taxi services available from Siliguri to Gangtok. There are two nearest railway stations to Gangtok namely in Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal. The nearest airport is the Bagdogra airport located 124 kms from Gangtok in West Bengal.

Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram is a beautiful town and a peaceful place having exotic landscape of lush green hills spread across the town to the horizon. The chief feature of Dampa forest is that the Counter Insurgency and Warfare School is located here. The school has aided over different countries in countering anti terrorist acts by providing training to the soldiers. The Tawi Sanctuary is located in central Mizoram at a distance of about 115 kms from Aizawl. It is one of the first sanctuaries of Mizoram and has many flora and fauna species. The sanctuary can also be visited by road from Aizawl town via Chhingchip. The Lengteng National Park is located in eastern Mizoram near the Murlen National Park and also the Lamzawl National park.

Imphal

Agartala
