Guwahati Geography and Climate

Also known as the "Gateway to the Northeast" the Guwahati city is one of the most important cities of Assam. Guwahati is a metropolitan city falling in the lower Assam area under Kamrup district. Dispur, the capital of Assam, is located within Guwahati.

The Guwahati city has an elevation of 55.5 metres. The metropolitan area of Guwahati is 556 km per sq. The geographical coordinates of Guwahati are 26o10'45"N Latitude and 91o45'0"N Longitude.

The city of Guwahati is surrounded by hills on all sides. To the west of Guwahati is the Nilachal hill, to the north is the Chitrachal hill and to the south lies the Narakasur hill. The Guwahati city is further divided into two parts—North Guwahati and South Guwahati.

The Guwahati city is blessed with abundance of resources including forest reserves, minerals, rivers and fertile land. The River Brahmaputra is the main river of Guwahati. One of the largest rivers in the world, the Brahmaputra river is about 2900 km long and is a trans-boundary and a braided river. While most of the rivers in India are considered female rivers, Brahmaputra is a male river. The river originates in southwestern Tibet. Brahmaputra cuts through the Himalayas and flows into Arunachal Pradesh as Dihang. After entering Assam, Brahmaputra becomes mightier and wider. At Guwahati, the Brahmaputra cuts through the rocks of the Shillong Plateau and is at its narrowest at 1 kilometer. Brahmaputra then enters Bangladesh and there it is joined by the Teesta River. There the river merges into The Padma and the Meghna river then finally enters the Bay of Bengal. There are several reserved forests in Guwahati. The reserved forests within the limits of GMC are Hengrabari, Phatasil and Jalukbari. Rani and Garbhanga reserved forests are also located in Guwahati. Guwahati also has mineral reserves in the form of oil and natural gas. Tea also occupies an important place in the resources of Guwahati.

Weather of Guwahati

Guwahati has a sub tropical climatic condition. The city experiences moderate climate throughout the year. Summer in Guwahati is accompanied by high humidity, the monsoon months experience heavy showers while winters are mild and pleasant.

The summer season in Guwahati starts in March and lasts till June. Temperature during this time of the year remains hot and is accompanied by high humidity. During summer the temperature remains between 20 to 32 degrees Celsius.

The monsoon months in Guwahati are from July to September. Guwahati is known to receive heavy Monsoon showers. Heavy rainfall occurs in the city from July to September. The city records annual rainfall of 180 cm.

The winter months in Guwahati are moderately cold. Mist and fog could be found in the morning hours in the months of winter in the city. The temperature ranges between 10 to 30 degrees Celsius in winter. Winter months in Guwahati are conducive for tourism activities as the weather during this time of the year remains tolerable.

Best time to visit Guwahati

One can visit Guwahati anytime of the year because of its moderate weather. Nevertheless, the best time to visit the city would be from November to March.
