In the year 1920 the Court of the District & Sessions Judge, Kamrup, was established. The court extended its territorial jurisdiction to erstwhile Nagaon District in the East and Dhubri District in the West. The first District & Sessions Judge, Assam valley was Mr. A.Merror Esquire.
Post independence, Mr. I.Rashul was appointed as the first District & Sessions Judge, Kamrup. At present, the courts territorial jurisdiction of the District is extended over three sub-divisions namely Guwahati Sub-Division, Rangia Sub-Division and Pragjyotishpur Sub-Division the establishment of the District Judge & the Chief Judicial Magistrate altogether, consists of 24 courts that are looked after by Judicial Officers of different grades.
