Dighalipukhuri

Legends tell stories about the lake on how it was started and why. However, the story that flows amongst the locals here is that a canal was dug from Brahmaputra River during the reign of King Bhagadatta of Pragjyotishpura. 

The reason behind the excavation of this long lake was the celebration of the marriage of his daughter, Bhanumati to Kaurava prince, Duyodhana. This incident is said to be mentioned in the Mahabharata. After the lake was formed, the Ahoms were said to have used it as naval yard.

Structure of Dighalipukhuri:

Dighalipukhuri, as the name says is a long manmade lake. It is rectangular in shape and the length of the lake is said to be about half a mile long. As is known, the lake was engraved out of the mighty river Brahmaputra and gradually with the passage of time it has been separated out from it. Lying there since time immemorial, the lake proved to be a landmark for a lot of emerging offices, organizations and educational institutions.

Dighalipukhuri and Tourism:

Dighalipukhuri has been a place of attraction for tourists since time immemorial. It is one of the prominent tourist attraction spots, as a lot of recreational activities take place here and people find it very exciting coming to this wonderful lake. 

Sitting beside the lake, with the cool breeze and the water giving it a scenic beauty, the lake became a place of wonder to hangout for couples as well as for families. There is also a park in the lake complex in order for the children to come and play and have their share of fun too.

Activities:

The Dighalipukhuri also boasts of activities like rowing championships. Initially, the Dighalipukhuri was the most preferred spot for swimming for the swimming training centre was in the lake itself. However, later on swimming was prohibited in the lake and so only boating and rowing is done in the lake now.

How to Reach Dighalipukhuri:

Dighalipukhuri, being in the center of the city, is easy to reach. The nearest bus stop is Latasil playground bus stop and reach the lake is within walking distance. Apart from that,one can reach Dighalipukhuri by auto rickshaw as well.

One must definitely take a glimpse of the lake when one comes to the Guwahati, especially at night since the lights come into effect and gives the lake a breathtaking look.
