Chandubi literally means where the sun sets as “chan” is sun and “dubi” is set in Assamese. The Chandubi Lake is situated in the lower part of Assam at a distance of 64 kms from the main city of Guwahati.
The Kulsi River surrounds the Chandubi lake and it spreads across 2000 hectares that also includes its tributaries. The monsoon period witnesses very heavy rainfall here in Chandubi which rather creates artificial flood around the area.
Formation of Chandubi Lake:
The formation of the Chandubi Lake was rather through a destructive process of earthquake. In the year
1897, Assam witnessed an earthquake of very high intensity which resulted in the formation of this wonderful lake.
The Garo Hills are situated bordering
Meghalaya and
Assam and the Chandubi lake is located just at the base of the Garo hills. The lake is measured to be as deep as 8 metres and the area is around 448 hectares.
Chandubi Lake and Tourism:
Chandubi Lake attracts a huge number of tourists to its place for its scenic beauty and beautiful ambience. The exotic beauty of the place attracts both locals, domestic and international tourists.
The natural lagoon of the place is a sight of mesmeric beauty. Local people come to the place for picnics and getaway plans. The place is also used for boating purpose, and people can take the sweet pleasure of boating in the lake and at the same time take a tour of the entire lake by enjoying the scenes around with hills and trees everywhere.
Fishing and rowing is another activity that is done here with full freedom and enjoyment. Apart from the natural beauty, the place is also home to a number of animals and plants. Tourists coming over also witness a number of fauna and flora, fish, algae, turtles and many other living organisms.
Apart from the migratory birds, forests, there are also small villages that surround the lake along with tea gardens.
Eco-tourism development projects have been set up in the place hence efforts are also being made in order to make this place a much better one than it is today.
In years to come, Chandubi Lake can be seen as a major tourist place in Assam.
Best time to visit Chandubi Lake:
Winter is the best period to visit the Chandubi Lake. It is during this time that the beauty of the place is at its optimum best. Hence, the period from November from April is the best.
How to Reach Chandubi Lake:
Chandubi Lake located at a mere 64 kms. from the main city of Guwahati is a very easy access by road. When coming from Guwahati, one can easily reach Mirza, and then via Barihat, Loharghat, one can reach Chandubi Lake in a private vehicle. If not private vehicle, one can easily take a bus to Mirza and then from there one has to hire a private vehicle or else cruiser and shared taxis can also be availed.
