Dispur is the capital city of the Northeastern state of Assam. It came into existence after Shillong was carved out of Assam as the capital and Dispur took its place in 1973.
Dispur is the seat of Government of Assam. The Assam Secretariat is located in Dispur along with the State Emergency Operations Centre and the Assam Assembly House. The Guwahati Shillong Road popularly known as GS Road and the Assam Trunk road or AT Road passes through Dispur. To the southern part of Dispur is the theologically important site of Basistha Ashram and the Srimanta Shankaradeva Kalakshetra, a cultural center and art gallery created in the 1990s. Next to Dispur is Jatia, the ancient township of Guwahati.
Though Dispur is well known as the capital of Assam, it is also famous for the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre, which is one of the busiest tea trading facilities in the entire world with large variety of tea being auctioned here every day.
