Dirgheswari Temple

The Dirgheswari temple is one of the supreme Devi Tirtha dedicated to Goddess Durga. The temple is located on the northern banks of the mighty River Brahmaputra at Dirgheswari hill and is an important Goddess temple of not only Guwahati but of the entire state of Assam.

Legend of Dirgheswari Temple

The Dirgheswari temple is situated in Dirgheswari hill also known as the Sita Parbati. Markanda, the great hermit had his hermitage in this hill. The mythological background behind Dirgheswari temple is that when Lord Shiva performed ‘Tandav’ and carried the dead body of his wife Sati Parvatii, over the Dirgheswari hill, one of her  limbs fell into the hill and hence the Dirgheswari temple was built on that exact spot.

The temple was built during the reign of Ahom King Pramata Singha in the 11th century. The temple has several rock cut images of the 11th century inside its premises. At the foothill of Dirgheswari, there is also a Ganesh Temple. The temple also has a beautiful picnic spot beside the river bank, where thousands of visitors throng during the month of December and January.

Festivals and Puja performed at Dirgheswari Temple

The daily Puja and rituals are performed by the local priests to Goddess Durga. Durga Puja is the main festival that is celebrated with great enthusiasm every year. Every year during Durga Puja, buffalo sacrifices are done annually to the Goddess.

How to Reach Dirgheswari Temple

Dirgheswari temple is well linked to all important place in Guwahati by both roadways and waterways. One can get buses, autos, trekkers, private vehicles and taxis for reaching the temple. There is also ferry or motorboat services from the southern bank of Brahmaputra. The nearest airport is the Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport and the nearest Railway station is Kamakhya station. The Temple is located around 4 kms away from the famous Doul Govinda Mandir.
