Art Galleries in Guwahati

The city of Guwahati is a hub and home of some of the best art galleries of the entire Northeast India which showcases the cultural heritage of the temple city. The Shrimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra commonly known as Kalakshetra is located in Panjabari and is the one of the most significant art and craft gallery in Guwahati with the best state of the art infrastructure in the entire state. The place was built in the 1990’s and is named after the great cultural scholar and exponent of Assam, Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva. Kalakshetra not only displays the traditional heritage of Assam but also of the seven sisters of the Northeastern region. There are different painting galleries, auditoriums, chambers and art forms depicting the famous leaders of Assam and their lives. It also sections for children, as well as a gallery for performances and theatre.

The Artist Guild is one of the oldest and leading galleries in Guwahati in terms of the displaying of different painting forms. This gallery offers regular art classes for the aspiring students and also provides a platform for all artists to display their skills.

Rabindra Bhawan is another art gallery in Guwahati located in Ambari which showcases various forms of traditional and modern art and paintings. One can witness here some of the finest paintings by various known painters and artists of not only Assam but of the entire northeastern region. Rabindra Bhawan also has a famous auditorium gallery, which provides a platform for dramas, plays, theaters, meetings and various other similar programmes that are conducted here. One can get a chance to regularly see different programmes, plays and drama shows that are being conducted in the Bhawan.
