It became the capital of Assam after Shillong was carved out of Assam and became the capital of Meghalaya. Dispur is known for some the famous tourist attractions and ancient sites. Some of these sites include the famous hermitage of the Basistha Rishi, Srimanta Shankaradeva Kalakshetra which is the biggest art and culture gallery in the entire northeast, Shilpagram which portrays the rich cultural heritage of Assam, Garbhanga Reserve Forest, Jatia, Regional Science Centre and lots more.

Basistha Temple

Travel enthusiasts can visit the famous Basistha temple in Dispur, which is not only famous for the temple but also has a beautiful and scenic waterfall and a trekking trail. The history of the Basistha Ashram dates back to the Vedic age, the temple is situated on the Basistha ashram, the abode of Rishi Basistha and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple has a beautiful scenic view which stands on the bank of the mountain streams and originates from the Meghalaya hills, which in turn becomes river Bharalu and Basistha that flows through the city.

Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra

Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra is located at Panjabari area of Dispur. It is one the biggest art galleries of not only Assam but of the entire Northeast. It also has a museum which preserves the rich tradition and culture of the Northeast India. The place is named after the great scholar and exponent of Assam Mahapurush Srimanta Shankardeva. On display, the museum includes things like the costumes, jewellery, articles, statues, stones, inscriptions, weapons and lots more. The Kalakshetra also has different sections for children, as well as a gallery for dramas, performances and theatres.

Shilpagram Guwahati

Shilpagram is a place in Dispur which houses the handicraft items portraying the rich cultural heritage of Assam and the Northeast as a whole. The main attractions of Shilpagram are its handloom carpets, ethnic jewellery, silk sarees, metal and handicrafts among many others. Shilpagram plays a major role in adding to the attraction of Dispur tourism.

Regional Science Centre in Dispur

Regional Science Centre is situated at the Khanapara area of Dispur. The museum has some interesting exhibits on both science education and pre-historic life. Some of the major attractions of the museum are the dinosaur, the cliff lift, magic tap, the coalmine, the fun mirror, the mirror maze, etc.

The two very famous markets in Dispur are the Ganeshguri and Beltola. Ganeshguri is a huge commercial area and the major attraction of the area is the famous Ganesh Mandir.
