Assam has a very strong historical background of local self government and panchayat. Assam was one of the pioneer states in India to enact the Panchayat Act and establish Panchayat Raj in the state.

PanchayatThe government of Assam created the Panchayat and Community Development in 1952. The main aim of the department is to uplift the rural people of the state. It enhances rural livelihoods, builds local resources by increasing the capability of rural poor through self employment program and builds up of infrastructure. The department also takes new initiatives projects mainly aiming the poor population.  


Panchayat


Panchayats are local self governments at the village or small town level. The panchayat has the following functions:

  1. Maintain street lights, construction and repair of roads in villages
  2. Keeping records of births, deaths and marriages in villages
  3. Looking after public health and hygiene by providing sanitation
  4. Providing education
